Poor second half costs Premiers victory

The Southern Premiers went down to Dunedin 32-23 on Saturday in breezy conditions at Bathgate Park.

Southern started the game all guns blazing and raced out to a 10-0 lead after 10 minutes. A well taken try to flying winger Piliu Tavake after good lead up work by Adam Knight, and a well taken conversion and penalty to fullback Jono Hayse had the supporters cheering, and hopeful of a good performance.

However the Ron Reggett memorial trophy is prized by both Clubs, and Dunedin fought back and kept in touch throughout the first half. Right on the half time break loosie Adam Knight finished a good Southern movement and reached over the tryline to score what everyone close saw as a try, however the referee and touch judge had a long conversation and disallowed the try for a double movement. With the score at 20-14 at the time a potential 27-14 lead was a significant decision in the context of the match.

In the second half Dunedin scored first and kicked a penalty to quickly lead 22-20 after 5 minutes. Unlike the first half – the Southern team continually turned over possession with handling errors and poor option taking and a faulty lineout. Kicks were made at the wrong time or without chasing pressure. Dunedin calmly took control in the second half and used the breeze wisely to keep Southern working out of their own half. Standouts for them were Highlanders loosie Gareth Evans and first five John Tili.

For Southern openside flanker Adam Knight was a standout performer, and lock Ryan Thompson worked hard throughout at lock. Tom Scanlon scrummaged strongly. In the backs Josh Ioane was all class at first five – particularly taking the ball to the line, evading defenders or putting support runners in holes. On the wing Ryan Tongia rarely received the ball with space and had limited chances.

The loss leaves the team down in 6th place, and starting to lose contact with the Top 4. A lack of bonus points is also impacting and could come back to haunt the team later in the season. This week the team plays Harbour at Watson Park and a win against another team sitting in the top 4 is very important.

ODT Summary of other matches:

Pencil Waisake Naholo in for the Highlanders’ next match.
The All Black winger scored three tries in Harbour’s 66-24 romp against Zingari-Richmond.

Gareth Evans’ no-look pass put Leroy van Dam into a gap and his try was the turning point in Dunedin’s 32-23 win against Southern.

The win helped Dunedin consolidate fourth place, while the Magpies are now nine points adrift of the top four.

Pirates was in danger of being forced to default midweek but fronted for its fixture against Taieri.

It was well beaten 68-19 but crossed the chalk three times and managed to contest the scrums for 55 minutes despite a critical shortage of props.

University A was understrength but still managed a comfortable 44-24 win against Green Island.

Speedy winger Gavin Stark nabbed three tries.

Kaikorai escaped with a 27-25 win against the winless Alhambra-Union.
