Important win over Taieri in race for Top 4

The Premiers beat Taieri 44-42 in a thoroughly enjoyable game of rugby at Bathgate Park on Saturday. Southern scored 12 points in the last 10 minutes to chase Taieri down with winger Mackenzie Haugh scoring the winning try in the corner.  Thirteen tries were scored in the fine conditions and the teams entertained the large crowd of supporters with it also being Southern’s Old Members Day.

It was an even first half. Taieri looked dangerous when they moved it wide through their backs and on the counter attack through fullback Josh Casey . Southern were the more physical team in the close quarters and took their opportunities when they were presented, including a 60m intercept from halfback Liam Howley, who also scored another in the second half. The score was 17-14 to Southern at halftime.

In the second half the tough defence by both teams relaxed with gaps opening up for eight second half tries – four to each team. Taieri looked to be gaining the ascendancy from their up-tempo game, while the bigger Southern forward pack looked to be running out of puff. Taieri pushed out to a 10 point margin 42-32 with 10 minutes remaining. However the skill of Josh Ioane at first five, in only his second outing for the Magpies due to Highlanders duty, gave the team confidence and he kept the ball in hand which led to late tries to Louis Tili and the Mackenzie Haugh. He also kicked a conversion from wide out that proved vital.

The forwards were strong with Simon Knight, Kyle Harris and Hisa Sasagi adding power. Hooker Sam Pene and flanker Alex Hohneck were work workhorses around the field and made some strong tackles. In the backs Liam Howley played well, Jono Hayes and Paul Tupai were solid and Mackenzie Haugh continued his try scoring spree. Ioane showed his class with his deft touches.

The five points taken from the win against the second ranked team, sets the team up in a strong position to make the top four. The team has the bye this weekend and then has four games remaining in the Gallaway Trophy against top four contender Kaikorai, a fading Dunedin, top of the table University (for the VG Cavanagh) and Alhambra-Union. It looks to be a battle between Taieri, Southern, Harbour, and Kaikorai for three spots, with University looking to be safe. A lot of the contending teams will play each other in the coming weeks.

Injuries will play a big part in the run to the final and who can keep their key players on the paddock may well determine the finalists. Southern in the last two weeks have lost power winger Josh Gordon to a broken jaw (season), Otago prop Hisa Sasagi to a calf injury (4 weeks), wing Rema Smith shoulder (season), and Bryce Hosie hamstring to long term injuries.
