Senior team take Championship Banner

The Senior team beat Green Island 20-17 on Bathgate Park to take out the Senior championship for 2021.

In front of a big supportive crowd from both Clubs, the match ebbed and flowed with good defence from both teams restricting most attacking opportunities.
Southern took the a 10 point lead through the accurate goal kicking of fullback and of ex Premier player Bryce Hosie and held that margin until Green Island scored a consolation try on fulltime to take the score to 20-17.

The Southern forwards played a tough match constantly hitting the ball up, and had a solid set piece. Both backlines attempted to make play but field position was the more important factor and Southern kicked intelligently. A period of attack by Green Island on the Southern line with 10 minutes to go was repelled time after time and that was the key to the win – a team effort on defence.

The Club congratulates the Senior team who had their ups and downs earlier in the season with a few disciplinary issues. They heeded the advice offered and finished the season playing clean, hard, winning rugby – and the rewards came. Arron Campbell and Andre Clarke were instrumental as co captains in driving the team to the title. It is the first Senior banner since the early 90s.
